Millions gathered to watch the phenomenon which was now the longest solar eclipse of the 21st century. Millions more frightened by superstitions and fables surrounding solar eclipses shuttered themselves inside.
The eclipse is caused when the moon covers the sun completely to cast a shadow on Earth. Below, watch video from the eclipse.
The eclipse, which occurred at about 8:50 p.m., was visible only in Asia. It moved north and east from India to Nepal, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Bhutan and China.
Thousands of of scientists, nature enthusiasts and students gathered in the Indian village of Tarenga, a location experts said would provide the best views of the eclipse. Thick clouds and rains in the area made the viewing, less than stellar, however.
